Banksia menziesii, commonly known as firewood banksia, is a small tree or large shrub, found in the local Perth area from Geraldton down to Mandurah. It's well adapted to our sandy soils and grows from 2 to 6 metres, loves a sunny location and well-draining soil.
It has long serrated, leathery green/grey leaves but it's prized for it's large cylindrical flower spikes that bloom from Autumn through winter. They are red, pink, orange and rarely yellow, and highly attractive to nectar-feeding birds. Flowers are followed by distinctive woody seed cones.
